One of my favorite things about the holiday season are those little moments when life slows down and you can enjoy the basics. Year after year I catch myself lounging in a chair close to the Christmas Tree and just gazing away at the lights. I am into my 30s now and have been doing this ever since I can remember. There is nothing like cozying up with your hot chocolate and looking at twinkle lights and feeling the magic like you did when you were 5 years old.
It is so funny how much has changed since then but there is still so much that has stayed the same. I now run a successful business, have two kids of my own, live on a different side of the country, BUT I still love a good Peppermint Hot Chocolate. It amuses me that the process of making it never changes either. I sit down with my warm hot chocolate and start to look at the lights and then notice the candy canes on the tree. I pluck one off of it’s tree branch and start swirling it into the rich goodness.
You may be thinking, “Wow… That is pretty deep and poetic for a story about making yourself something to drink.” In all honesty, it really is more than that. It is literally bringing a well-loved and cherished memory back to life year after year. It actually brings happy tears to my eyes just writing about it now. Like I said, life has most definitely changed and clinging to traditions is sometimes the only way to keep us grounded keep those magical memories alive.
For instance, most of these quiet evenings spent staring at the tree has more than likely turned into a bit of productive time for me as well. While the kids sit and watch the lights with me I am also usually checking off to do lists and getting mentally prepared for all of the little things that have to be done during the season.
My newest addiction these days are these International Delight Hot Chocolates. They are made with real milk and come in both milk chocolate and dark chocolate. I have always been a dark chocolate fan so I am glad that they are representing for me! My kids are LOVING the milk chocolate though. I was actually walking through the grocery store looking for my favorite coffee creamer and when I turned around I saw these in a refrigerated end cap and knew I had to get them.
Now that I just bared my soul (and traditions) to you, tell me some of your holiday traditions in the comments below!
