Until recently I hadn’t travelled into NYC in over 10 years. I have missed the city for a long time now, but unless you visit it semi-often the magic seems to fade from your memory. I didn’t get to go and do too much during my travels there last week, but just being in the city and experiencing all the crazy first hand was enough to make my mind reel back to all the fun times I have had there. Luckily scent memory is a real thing and I have recently acquired a few fragrances from Bond No 9! The New York beach collection is absolutely summer in bottles. The specific fragrance I want to talk about to day is Sag Harbor; it is a flower-garden, ivy-coated, marine scented ode to that quietly beguiling alternative South Fork town.
If you aren’t familiar, Sag Harbor has been called the non-Hamptons Hampton. It is THE summer spot for writers, artists and designers who enjoy the quaint, old-fashioned atmosphere that is infused with a disctinct Manhattan cool. Sag Harbor was actually mentioned in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick; random but interesting. Bond No 9 captures that essence perfectly, but of course they would.
If you aren’t familiar with Bond No 9, they are actually a downtown perfumery that has been around for 10 years now. They pride themselves in designing artisanal fragrances that embody the different neighborhoods and streets of New York. Bond No 9 has a mission that is dual in nature: restore artistry to perfumer, and to mark every New York neighborhood with a scent of its own. I love the idea behind the brand and the scents themselves are fantastic.
The top notes in Bond No 9’s Sag Harbor are Bergamot, Ivy Leaves and Sag Harbor Bay Accord. The mid-notes are Peonies, Honeysuckle, Long Island Grapes and Magnolia. The base notes are Oud, Amber and Sandalwood. And it is no wonder that I am obsessded with this fragrance. Sag Harbor may be an ode to one of New York’s prime vacationing spots, but it screams home to me. I was born and raised in Brandon, Mississippi. I grew up with honeysuckles blanketing the woods around my house, a magnolia tree in my grandma’s yard, and a love of sandalwood.
Other fragrances from the New York beach collection include Shelter Island, Montauk, Coney Island, Fire Island and Hamptons. You can find the fragrance at Nordstrom and Saks. What NYC beach perfume would you be most interested in smelling? I have samples of them all and desperately need the full sizes of each and every one!
