Summer is all about making memories. Those memories stick with you for a lifetime. One of my fondest childhood summer memories was my mom teaching me to make Sun Tea. I am from the Deep South and a day doesn’t go buy when there isn’t some sweet tea sippin’ and front porch sittin’! Haha! If you aren’t familiar with Sun Tea it is actually Tea that is brewed from the heat of the sun! Pretty cool, right? Very easy too! So, celebrate summer and learn how to make Sun Tea and great memories!
One thing that has changed since my childhood are the varieties of tea bags! My family has always been Lipton Tea fresh brewed iced tea lovers, but they took what was good and made it better AND easier. I stumbled upon boxes of gallon-sized tea bags on my last trip to Walmart! No more needing several tea bags for one pitcher!
What you need:
Jar/Pitcher with lid, tea bags, filtered water, sugar, and the hot summer sun!
Directions:
{one} Fill Pitcher/Jar up with filtered water. Close lid. Filtered water is necessary because you want to make sure your water is as clean as possible. Using water that isn’t filtered/purified can lead to problems when brewing. Close lid because it will be outside for hours and you don’t want bugs getting into it.
{two} Determine how many gallons your container holds and how many tea bags you need and place them in. If you are using individual tea bags then make sure the string and paper are on the outside of the jar. It makes it easier to fish them out later.
{three} Let the sun work it’s hot magic for 2-4 hours.
{four} Add sugar to taste. For me that is A LOT of sugar. Southern, remember? If you like unsweet tea then omit this step.
{five} Pour over ice and garnish as you please.
{six} Store remaining tea in the fridge.
Sun tea is ridiculously easy to make but also so fun. I am a lazy girl so the easier something is, the better. I also love making memories in the process of making this tea. My kids and I play in the pool or go run errands while this is “cooking”. The first few times you are making it, you will catch yourself watching the jar in awe of the process. You can sea the brown swirling out of the bags. Kind of beautiful in it’s simplicity.
Teach your kids how to do this, too. Not only will they get a sense of pride from something they did all by themselves, you will have one less chore on your list. I remember being so elated when I was 10 or so and my family members and friends would compliment my tea. It was one of the first things that I made all by myself.
Sun Tea is a summer staple in my house. Another summer staple that pairs perfectly with it is the classic BLT. In my house we actually call them BLT+C because we add a slice of cheese! In case you HAPPEN not to know how to make a BLT: you fry up some bacon, slice a tomato and lettuce, and stack them between two slices of bread. Voila!
I am so excited to share my delicious Sun Tea recipe with you all! I hope you try it out! To learn more about Lipton Tea and their many different flavors and offerings visit www.walmart.com/lipton and www.liptontea.com. Both sites actually have Kermit the frog on it and there are some cute little things to do.
