Thank you, Skechers, for making this post possible by supporting Breast Cancer Awareness.
October is the official month of Breast Cancer Awareness. Finding a cure has always been something that I have supported, but this year it has really taken on a new meaning for me. Earlier this year my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. My family and I are stationed here in Florida while my mom is living in Virginia, so it has been quite hard to wrap my head around everything while being so far away.
She had a biopsy done for the lump they found and then had to go through radiation to make sure they got everything and prevent the spreading… Everything was seemingly going fine, but she started experiencing burns from the radiation. Apparently this is a “normal side effect” but it doesn’t happen to everyone. She was one of the unlucky ones. Her burns were so bad that they prescribed her a cream that they normally use to treat burn victims.
The doctor decided that since the burns were pretty bad that it was time to heal. He said that because she had already gone through most of the treatments, only 3 left, that they could stop them. He said that with the treatments she already underwent that she had received 99% of the benefit of them and didn’t see the harm in skipping the last few.
Though she is “done” with treatment, she still hasn’t gotten a verdict on if the cancer is in remission or not. She seems pretty positive. When I ask her questions about it she seems to have a genuinely upbeat response to everything. I don’t know if that is just to shield me from worry or if it is real, but either way it is good to see that the treatments she received have her in high hopes.
But that is why I wear pink. I mean, it is a fabulous shade that I rock all year long but the month of October gets an extra treatment of pink. I know several women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer, sought treatment and have conquered it and I hope that the numbers increase with time.
