There is a ton of buzz among beauty lovers about the new Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains (which is a ridiculously long name so throughout the remainder of this post they will be referred to as just Balm Stains). One thing I have had several people ask me is, “How do they compare to Tarte LipSurgence?” I am writing this to compare and contrast just that.
I do enjoy both and they are very similar yet different. Let me explain…
First off, they are similar in appearance. They have the same type of packaging, the same twist-up “bullet”, and the same color-specific packaging. The packaging is the actual color of the product so when you fish it out of your handbag or what-not you already know if it is the right color immediately.
They are about the same in length, the Balm Stains are slightly taller but only by a smidgen. Even though the Balm Stains are taller the LipSurgence actually have slightly more product. Tarte LipSurgence are .1 oz and the Revlon Balm Stains are .095 oz. Not enough of a difference to really bat an eyelash at but I suppose some people want to know these small details.
They also have a similar texture. They glide on the lip and leave a balmy feeling/finish. The LipSurgence has a little more slip than the Balm Stains but overall very, very similar. The biggest difference in the product itself is the “flavor”. Tarte LipSurgence has that cold, minty feeling when applied–the Balm Stains don’t. They both actually have the same minty scent though. The Balm Stain has no cooling effect at all.
The pigmentation of both brands are the same. For something marketed as a balm, I find that these have the pigment of a good lipstick. It should be noted that when you wear this, you definitely need to realize that these will STAIN your lips. And yes, the LipSurgence AND the Balm Stains will leave pigment on your lips for hours. The Balm Stains tend to last longer than the LipSurgence does. You have been forewarned: Apply these with commitment because they aren’t going anywhere! Both brands have a wide variety of colors available and I am sure that you can find one to suit your taste.

I would like to mention that I really like the fact that both lines have bullets that come to a point resembling that of a lip liner. Because of the fact they are highly pigmented I enjoy being able to line the lips before filling it in with the same product. It saves on time and money. (And you know I am a fan of both!) Speaking of money… Revlon Balm Stains retail for $8.99 (but you can always find a good BOGO50) and the Tarte LipSurgence retail for $24 (but you can usually find these in special value kits).
Here comes the real question… Which does My Newest Addiction Beauty Blog prefer?
REVLON JUST BITTEN KISSABLE BALM STAIN!
Because they are soooo similar and only have very small differences the Balm Stains are a better value for the money. Will I stop purchasing Tarte LipSurgence? Probably not! When they come bundled in with other products in value kits, Tarte’s products sometimes rival drugstore prices.
It has been pointed out that these could possibly be similar to the Clinique Chubby Sticks but I don’t own any of them so I wouldn’t be able to compare those… YET! :) If there is something that I didn’t point out and you have a question about it, feel free to leave it in the comments below. Thank you!
